An unusual and wonderfully expressive vintage grotesque character figure dating from the early to mid 20th century. Featuring a painted composition head with exaggerated comic features, period fabric costume, composition hands and a small jug accessory.
Likely German or Central European in origin, these whimsical figures were produced as novelty toys, animated display figures or fairground souvenirs during the interwar period. The exaggerated facial expression, glass eyes and folk-art styling give the piece considerable character and display appeal.
Presented in original as-found condition with age-related wear, paint loss and losses to the nose and ear, all consistent with its age and use.
A fascinating addition to a collection of antique toys, carnival memorabilia, folk art or unusual curiosities.
