Höf Pottery – Western Australia

Elizabeth and Helmut Höf were key figures in the development of post-war studio ceramics in Western Australia. Migrating from Europe in the mid-20th century, they established Höf Pottery during a period when Australian domestic ceramics were shifting from purely functional ware toward expressive, design-led forms.

Working primarily from the 1950s through the 1970s, the Höfs produced vases and decorative vessels that reflected both European modernist influence and the emerging Australian appetite for mid-century interiors. Their work is characterised by:

  • Clean, architectural forms

  • Flared rims and balanced proportions

  • Controlled, satin to semi-gloss glazes

  • Subtle speckling and restrained colour palettes

Unlike the more commercial output of contemporaries such as Wembley Ware, Höf Pottery operated closer to a studio model. Production numbers were smaller, and glaze variations were more nuanced, giving their pieces a quieter sophistication.

Today, Höf ceramics are increasingly appreciated not just as vintage décor, but as part of Western Australia’s design history — representing the intersection of migration, craftsmanship and mid-century modern taste.

Their work remains highly displayable: modern enough for contemporary interiors, yet firmly rooted in local ceramic heritage.
