A bold Victorian Staffordshire spill vase featuring a Scottish couple beneath a grapevine arch, complete with bird and hound. Beautiful colour and presence.
Dog’s neck has an old repair (stable and tidy).

This impressive mid-19th century Staffordshire spill vase depicts a Scottish couple standing beneath an arched bower of grapes, hands joined beneath a perched bird. At their feet, a slender hound looks upward — a lovely narrative detail typical of Staffordshire folk pottery.

These vases were originally made for the mantel, with the central opening used to hold paper spills for lighting lamps and fires. Today they’re collected for their bright enamels, bold modelling, and the glimpse they offer into Victorian life and storytelling.

This example features:

  • Strong original colour

  • Crisp detail to the clothing, grape clusters, bird, and foliage

  • Generous height (approx. 30 cm) for real visual impact

Condition:
An antique piece with age-appropriate crazing and minor enamel wear.
The dog features an old, stable repair to the neck, neatly done and secure.
Presents beautifully from the front.

A striking addition to any collection of Staffordshire figures or Scottish-themed ceramics.

Dimensions: approx. 30 cm tall
