The Lady with the Camelias by Alexandre Dumas, the Younger (Dumas fils).
An early English-language edition of Dumas's famous La Dame aux Camélias, the novel that inspired Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata. The title page specifically states: “On which is founded the opera of ‘La Traviata’.”
Published in London by E. Harrison, Exeter Change, translated without abridgment from the eighth Paris edition, with an introduction by Jules Janin.
The book is undated, but this English translation was in circulation by 1856, making this a genuinely early Victorian edition of the work.
Period half leather binding with green leather spine and corners, gilt rules and gilt “CAMELIAS” spine title, with marbled paper-covered boards.
Condition: Fair antique condition. Heavy rubbing and wear to boards and leather, losses and deterioration to marbled paper, bumped and worn corners and general surface wear. Foxing and spotting internally, particularly around the title pages. Front hinge/binding shows wear but remains attached. No dust jacket as issued. Please see photos carefully for condition.
