Step back into the late 19th and early 20th century with this cast iron mechanical bank featuring Uncle Sam. These banks were originally created to encourage children to save money in a fun and interactive way. When a coin is placed in Uncle Sam’s hand and a lever is pressed, he deposits the coin into his carpet bag.
A classic and highly collectible mechanical cast iron bank, featuring Uncle Sam in top hat and tails, standing proudly on a plinth decorated with an American eagle. This bank was produced in the late 19th century by Shepard Hardware Co., Buffalo, New York, one of the most famous makers of mechanical banks.
When a coin is placed in Uncle Sam’s hand and the lever is pressed, the figure deposits it into the satchel at his feet. These patriotic banks were both toys and teaching tools, encouraging thrift in the late Victorian era.
