A charming mid-19th century Staffordshire spill vase featuring a mother and child beside a rustic tree trunk. Beautifully hand-painted with bright original enamels and full of Victorian hearthside character. A lovely decorative piece and a genuine antique.
Bring a touch of Victorian storytelling into your home with this delightful Staffordshire spill vase, dating to around 1860. Hand-painted in vibrant enamels, it depicts a mother and child beside a textured tree trunk, complete with a small bird perched playfully on the girl’s hand.
Originally made for the mantelpiece, the hollow trunk held paper spills used for lighting lamps and fires. Today, it stands as a whimsical example of folk ceramics from the Staffordshire potteries, loved for their naïve charm and domestic warmth.
This piece shows lovely colour retention, a clean glaze, and age-appropriate crazing to the base—typical of genuine 19th-century examples. Displays beautifully.
Dimensions: approx. 24–25 cm tall
Condition: Very good antique condition; small glaze nib to rim as photographed.
A wonderful addition for collectors of Victorian Staffordshire or anyone who loves decorative English ceramics.
