Small but striking, this late Victorian toothpick holder (or spill vase) was made by Sowerby & Co. of Gateshead around 1890, in their signature "Purple Malachite" slag glass. Rich marbling of violet, white and aubergine swirl through its deeply moulded surface, patterned with pressed flowers, fans and lozenges – known as Pattern No. 8554.
Finished with a zigzag rim and a stunning pinwheel base, it’s a bold collectible that proves great things come in tiny, weirdly beautiful packages.
Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks, or dullness.
Dimensions:
Height: 6.5 cm
Diameter: 6.5 cm
Pair with our matching 1870s and 1890s Sowerby pieces for a glorious marbled cluster.
