Mid-Century Decorative Ceramics, c.1950s–1960s
A striking pair of mid-century ceramic dog bookends finished in a pale ivory crackle glaze, each seated alertly on a contrasting black plinth with a gilt band. The stylised modelling and controlled crackle finish are typical of decorative export wares produced during the 1950s–60s, designed to complement modern interiors while echoing the traditional Staffordshire dog form.
These were made as functional decorative objects — substantial enough to hold books while still reading as sculptural accents on a shelf, desk, or cabinet. The clean lines, restrained palette, and textured glaze give them a distinctly mid-century character rather than a Victorian revival look.
An attractive and practical vintage pair that sits comfortably in both contemporary and classic interiors.
