The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was formed in Melbourne in 1914. Men were recruited from Victoria and the New South Wales border regions for the 8th Light Horse, whose fighting reputation would soon be among the finest of any formation to leave Australia’s shores.
During its five years of service, the Regiment fought at Gallipoli, where in August of 1915 at The Nek it was decimated, losing its first CO, Lt-Col White. Then in October, Lt-Col Leslie Maygar VC, a venerated Boer War veteran took command of the Regiment, leading it through Sinai and Palestine where at Gaza the Regiment again suffered heavy losses in action. At Beersheba, the renowned Maygar was mortally wounded although his fighting spirit remained with the regiment, a paragon, for the rest of the war.
