The Hokkaido bear carving tradition, known as “Ainu Iomante Bear Carvings”, originates from the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido, Japan. This tradition stems from the Ainu’s spiritual and cultural practices, particularly the “iomante” ceremony, where bears were revered as sacred beings and messengers of the gods.
The bear carvings began as an artistic expression of the Ainu’s respect for the bear. Over time, during the early 20th century, Japanese settlers to Hokkaido adopted and adapted the practice, turning it into a more commercialized art form. These settlers created detailed, lifelike bear carvings primarily for trade and as souvenirs. This adaptation eventually became known as Hokkaido Kuma (Hokkaido Bear) carvings.
While the Ainu’s carvings were symbolic and spiritual, the Japanese settlers’ bear carvings became decorative or utilitarian. These pieces are now sought-after as collectibles, blending indigenous culture with modern Hokkaido craftsmanship.
The tradition continues today, with artisans creating these carvings for local and global markets. They are a popular souvenir for travelers visiting Hokkaido and a representation of the island’s unique cultural heritage.
