Made in Germany | c.1930s
A striking and characterful German porcelain ashtray featuring two stylised terrier-type dogs, modelled back-to-back in classic interwar design language.
The piece sits within a heavy chrome-like metal mount, framing a vivid raspberry-pink glazed well — a colour combination strongly associated with late Art Deco and early 1930s continental decorative wares.
Marked “MADE IN GERMANY” to the underside, indicating pre-WWII export production.
This is a superb example of decorative smoking accessories from the golden age of European café culture — playful, sculptural, and unapologetically bold.

🏛 Curatorial Note
Animal-form ashtrays were particularly popular in Germany and Central Europe between the wars, often blending humour with strong geometric bases. Pieces like this were intended as tabletop conversation objects, not merely utilitarian items.
Today, they cross cleanly into decorative object, display sculpture, or collector’s cabinet piece.
