St Paul’s, London | c. late 19th century
Impressive late-Victorian Chubb & Son patent padlock, stamped St Paul’s, London, with original patent and registration markings. Heavy brass-faced body with substantial forged steel shackle, showing deep, honest wear from prolonged industrial use.
Chubb & Son were among the most important lockmakers of the 19th century, supplying high-security locks for warehouses, railways, shipping, banks and government buildings across Britain and the Empire. This broad oval form is characteristic of their heavy-duty patent designs.
A strong example of British industrial engineering and a striking decorative object in its own right.
